How is this number
calculated?
This is an approximation of the infection rate and
mortality rate from the latest research data. The data shows
that there are about 2,000,000 hospital acquired infections per
year. Using that estimate there is about one hospital acquired
infection every 15 seconds. Using the same data on mortality,
there is about 1 hospital death attributed to hospital acquired
infections every 315 seconds.
Since January of 2009 the number of seconds are being counted. We
divide that number by 15 to get the number
of Hospital Acquired Infections since the
first of the year.
Similarly with the hospital deaths we
divide the number of seconds by 315 to
approximate the number of deaths resulting
from Hospital Acquired Infections since the
beginning of 2009
